Recently I had the chance to interview Denise Hunter, who is one of my co-authors in the contemporary romance anthology This Time Around. You might be familiar with her–she’s the author of numerous contemporary romances, and has had several of her books made into Hallmark movies, including A Convenient Groom. Thanks, Denise, for spending a little time with us. At the end of the interview, find out how you can win a copy of This Time Around, autographed by Denise!
What is the first book that made you cry?
Jane Eyre
Who are some of your author friends and how do they support your writing?
One of my first writer friends, Colleen Coble, also became my critique partner. We’ve been crit partners for more than twenty years and have also become best friends. We’ve been through so many ups and downs together—in writing and life. She’s been a tremendous support, and I can’t even imagine what the journey would’ve been like without her.
What was your inspiration for writing your novella from This Time Around?
I was thrilled when my editor approached me about writing a novella for a collection with two fabulous authors. She wanted a compilation of light, heartwarming stories that might appeal to Hallmark fans. Well, sign me up! Not only do I enjoy watching Hallmark movies, but three of my novels have been adapted into them. All I needed was an idea. I thought it might be fun to toss around ideas with the woman who produced my movies, so I got in contact with her. It was fun to brainstorm with someone who viewed story with a visual format in mind. Ultimately, I think that viewpoint greatly enhanced the final plot.
What is your writing process?
I have a book due every six months, so the first thing I do is make a schedule. I write six pages a day during my first draft stage (which takes about four months), then I do three more drafts before I turn it in. I usually write at a local coffee shop every morning M-F until I have six “good” pages. Some days that happens faster than other days!
Who is your favorite literary character and why?
So many to choose from! If I only get to pick one, I’d choose Michael Hosea from Francine Rivers’s Redeeming Love. Even though he goes through tremendous pain in his relationship with Angel, he never gives up on her. It’s such a beautiful picture of Christ’s love for us.

To be honest, I enjoy watching them, but I rarely check what the movie is called. But I enjoy them and watch them when I can. I especially like their Christmas movies. I watched a bunch of Christmas ones, maybe it was last year, not sure, and they were like a Christmas in July type of programming. It was kinda fun!

Ummm…I don’t own a TV, so I don’t think I’ve watched a Hallmark movie! Years ago, I watched an old movie called “White Christmas” & enjoyed that!
I can’t think of a favorite but love most, Christmas ones are my favorite genre hallmark movies though!
Thank you for this opportunity as anything you write is amazingly good!
I love Christmas Town. I always enjoy Hallmark’s Christmas movies.
I’m a big Hallmark movie lover so it’s hard to pick just one but I especially loved The Lost Valentine. I must say we watch less now that Hallmark has chosen to put content in that we don’t agree with.
My favorite is I think it is called holly and Ivy and it is about a mom who has cancer and a new lady bought the house next door and they become friends. She asks the lady that when she passes if she would raise the girls well then she does and then they go to court and they all become a family . It is so good and so moving . Although I love all the Hallmark movies although recently they have chosen to include content that I am against and those movies when it starts I turn off. It is too bad that Hallmark has chosen to include those movies in their lineup.
The Christmas Shoes
